I LOVE shoes. My dream is to reach Carrie-level shoe closets – then, I’ll know I have succeeded in life. (Yes, very superficial, I know! But if I can afford to buy all the shoes I fall in love with, then I know that I have financially made it in life and in my career.)
Of all types of shoes, my favorite without a doubt is high heel shoes. Not only are they beautiful to look at, but they do wonders for my legs and my height. I’m quite short but no one knows if I’m wearing a stunning pair of stilettos!
I made a conscious decision at a young age to not let beautiful shoes get in the way of my health – I certainly don’t need any damage to my feet or spine. But on those special occasions (weddings, parties, nights out) you will certainly see me wearing one of my gorgeous pairs of shoes.
Let’s all learn about the basic types of high-heel shoes and enjoy these beautiful pairs!
Pump heels:
Like the name implies, these beauties have elevated soles that ‘pump’ you up. The high-heeled pump usually has a 2 to 3-inch heel, and they provide some stability for walking. I love peep toe pumps that show just a tip of the toes and I actually find them very easy to balance on, but wouldn’t want to walk with them all day!
Wedges:
These heels are closed from front to end, so there is no gap between the platform in the front and the heel in the back. They tend to look more casual than other types of heels and can be comfortable to wear since they’re easier to balance on. I’m not the biggest fan of these – I think they are a trend that will die off fast.
Stiletto heels:
My favorite kind of heels! They are in my opinion, the sexiest looking shoes, both on and off. They have long, thin heels and thin soles – creating a dramatic, curvy effect to the shoe. They do crazy, sexy things to your legs, lengthening them and emphasizing your leg muscles. They’re less comfortable than platform heels but well worth the pain for short amounts of time.
Platform stilettos:
Combine platforms and stilettos and you get this gorgeous type of shoe. Having a thin, long heel like in the stiletto but adding a thick platform in the front makes this shoe one heck of an option to look taller. (This shoe is an exaggerated version of the pump!) If you want to wear heels all day, this is a good option as it’s more comfortable and stable to walk with.
Kitten heels:
These safer, more comfortable shoes give you just a small increase in height, but allow you to look sweet and chic. The heels are short and tapered, usually less than 5 cm in height. This type of shoe was actually used to train girls to walk in high heels in the 1950s! It’s a great choice for the office since they look elegant and are comfortable to wear.
There are MANY types of heels and shoes, and the types are constantly expanding as designers become more creative. Here is a handy visual shoe dictionary:
I’m more of a wedge type of girl! Love your post! My mama has a HUGE shoe addiction!
I don’t get to wear heels as often anymore. Having a chronic pain disorder kind of puts a damper on that. Not to mention, I’m a little taller, so heels often make me taller than my husband (who isn’t short at 6′ tall!) They really are beautiful, though!
I love shoes – although after both pregnancies, my heels kept getting lower and lower! I do love a good platform shoe, though!
I love stilettos and platforms. However, since my SO is kind of short I don’t wear heels that often as we then look awkward as a couple.
I love heels, but don’t wear them much. Make my legs and back hurt 🙂
Thanks for the shoe inspiration! I need to add a few new pairs of heels to my collection for fall.
Those shoes are all so pretty! I also LOVE heels, but my husband doesn’t because he’s the same height as me. 😛
The closet is absolutely my dream come true! Thanks for the shoe inspiration as well.
I LOVE all heels but I never really have anyplace to wear them to.
Looks like you love shoes as much as my wife! I better hide this site from her or she’ll be taking off with my wallet…again! 🙂
I love the look of the platform heels but would kill myself trying to walk in them. I stick to the kitten heels to ensure my personal safety.
I like heels they just dont like me.
I, too, love my heels. Love this post! need more shoes, now.
I own ZERO high heels because at 5-11″ I do not want to feel like a giant! I agree that most of the styles are really pretty though!
For most days at work I’m either a wedge or kitten heel kind of gal. for special occasions I go for pumps or stilettos.
I also love shoes!! I can deal with anything if I have the right shoes!!
When I was younger I could wear high heels, but not anymore. lol Now, it is flats, or something with just a little bit of a heel;. I do love the shoe closet. It’s amazing!
I’ve got a couple of platform stillettos…and I look absolutely ridiculous in them LOL with that being said, I do love shoes and have many pairs!
When I was younger, shoes were definitely my thing! I felt that every single outfit needed its own personal pair of shoes. Then when I got pregnant with my first child, that is the first thing I started purchasing the moment I found out we were having a boy, he had 18 pairs of shoes before he was even born! Now that I am 48, and a grandma, I do not indulge in shoes for myself, I have the ones I like, I get new ones when needed, BUT, I absolutely LOVE buying shoes for the grandchildren!
I like my shoes with rounded toes and platform without heels. I bought these awesome demona heels and didnt read they were 4 1/2 in tall and I cant walk in them at all
I hate shoe shopping. I have very big and very wide feet. Plus I’m pretty traditional about styles that I like. I can never find shoes that I like that fit well.
My daughter loves shoes and has a great collection. As for me, post my spinal operation, it is only medical shoes for me 🙁
When I was single, I liked buying and collecting high heeled shoes. Now, that married and with two rambunctious kids, high heels are a no, no!
I like wedges because they give the height but yet they tend to be a lot more comfortable than many other high heeled options.
I enjoyed reading and viewing this post. I like to be cute, but comfort comes first. I like that you shared some comfy versions as well.
I am so tall (and clumsy) but I still love looking at high heels. This was great to check out!
