Even if you’re looking forward to moving into a new home, it is still a stressful experience.
First of all, you have had to sell your own home and look for another one, all the while hoping that everything will come together at the same time so that you can move out of one home and straight into the other on the same day.
Whatever distance you are moving, you will need the services of a good removal firm. A professional and experienced company are more likely to treat your possessions carefully and provide a better service. If you use someone just because they have a large van, then you might not get the same level of service or professionalism.
Making sure you are organized and have used a good lawyer, a real estate company with a good reputation and a professional removal firm, will make the whole experience easier and less stressful.
Make sure all your boxes are labeled clearly and don’t forget to bubble wrap delicate items and to keep them at the top. Boxes, tape and bubble wrap can be bought from your nearest UPS store, have a look online and find out if there’s an outlet near you.
Another really important thing you should do is make an emergency box. Hopefully, nothing will go wrong, but it’s best to be organized and to avoid disasters. The emergency box can be used if you can’t move into your home immediately, or in cases where your home isn’t ready to be lived in.
Here are some suggestions for your box:
- A small pan for heating water or milk or a kettle
- Tea, coffee, milk and water
- A hot water bottle if you move during the winter
- Nightwear, toothbrushes, toothpaste, a comb and a hairbrush
- Spare bottles, nappies, dummies and cuddly toys if you have children
- A bottle opener, you might need a drink!
- Cutlery, takeaway containers, and plates
- Candles and lighters
- Change of undies for the morning
- Headache tablets and the medicine you use if the kids are ill.
- Wet wipes
- Phone chargers
It’s not likely that something will go wrong, but you will be glad you packed this box if it does!
The worst-case scenario is something goes wrong with the money transfer, payday isn’t for another week and you find yourself homeless for a day or two. Don’t panic, have a look at options like payday loans. Applying is easy – just get online, register and apply by filling in a short form. If you’re approved, the money can be in your bank in 15 minutes. Just please, please, please only apply if you have no other options available. Interest rates are very high and payments must be paid back quickly.
After that, the removal company can arrange storage for your furniture, and you can look for a hotel without worrying how to pay the bill. Normally this kind of blip only take a day to sort out and before you know it, you’ll be in your new home and unpacking what seems like a million boxes.
I would of never of thought of using theses tips for when we move!
I love the emergency box idea. I never would have thought to do that, but it makes perfect sense. Also, labeling is a big one. I have only moved a few times and I wasn’t great at labeling my stuff, so I couldn’t find what I needed when I wanted it.
I love the idea of the emergency box,i refuse to move anymore i really hate all the problems and stress that comes with it lol.
Labeling boxes are totally a good way to save time and things going on in terms of doing a move – good tips!
I moved from one side of the street to the other and only wish I had used a moving service–I moved most of my belongings in a shopping cart! Some male friends came over and carted the furniture across the street–I carried my then cat in a big trans file box–Other then the cat it would have been so much easier to have a company move things for me.
I have moved so many times in my life and had to learn this the hard way. Labelling is a must!
I’ve moved about 20 times and sometimes I’ve done the moving myself, sometimes I’ve had a service. It’s way easier and less stressful to use a service, but it’s also significantly more expensive. I did a cross-country move myself several years ago and next time, I’m totally hiring a service. That was work!
I used a service the last time I moved. It was nicer, but I was so worried about the in-between. Recommending a quality service is great advice!!
I think the most important tip is properly labeling boxes! Like, more than just “living room” “kitchen” etc. I’ve labeled by room, but then still had to dig through 20 boxes to find the basic essentials. Maybe label boxes that have the things you NEED to get started in a new home.
I have moved a lot! But never really thought on an emergency box! Will remember this for the next time 😀
I recent;y moved. Twice. And agree with these tips. Very helpful!
I haven’t moved in 10 years. The time is coming for a new move so your tips are valuable. Thanks, Wendy
I hate moving! But luckily I never have to move anything…my husband and his friends take care of everything. Usually he has a lot of help moving but last time it was just him and his friend. These are some great tips though, especially undies for in the morning. I had to look through so many boxes just to find some!
It’s always great to be ready for anything. I moved in April it was nuts I still haven’t unpacked yet.
GREAT article! We moved from an apartment complex to the housing development next door, and so we decided to just go a little at a time. I will NEVER do that again. I don’t care if I’m moving down the street, it’s all getting packed up as if I’m going to Alaska…
Thanks for the great tips. I have always been amazed by people who can pick up and move abroad. It seems like a lot of fun but not something I can do.
Thanks for the tips. We have moved a few times and I wish we had packed an emergency box.
I never thought about the emergency box before. That is brilliant. We have a move coming up in a few months so this will be quite helpful.
I might be using this list soon (I hope anyway). Thank you for sharing it has been a while since I have moved and this is perfect to make it go smoother.
I have been in such a dilema while moving out and and having nothing usefull out of the boxes. It’s horrible. Every time I move I have to keep looking and searching to get what I need. Emergency box and labeling sounds like an excelent idea to me.
Fantastic tips I made such a mess of things when I moved – I labelled nothing and it took forever trying to work out where things were lol x
Moving comes with stress. We have done this several times when my husband was still in the Navy. Glad he is retired now and we are settled in. Thanks for these tips.
I just moved so I can say first hand very stressful! But I overcame it! I wish I would have seen this post first though!
Luckily when my family moved from Kansas to Pennsylvania, my husband’s company paid for movers. so, I didn’t have too much to worry about with packing and unpacking. We may move again soon, and will again use the movers. Less stress!
These are really great tips for moving. It can be either stressful or well planned. With this info, you can be very prepared
Moving is definitely one of the most stressful situations ever. I love your tip for creating an emergency box!
these are great tips especially when times comes for son to leave for college
Interesting. .we moved and I think the emergency box is a good idea, though wouldn’t add milk to it.
These are some great tips. Moving can be very stressful so it is good to have a plan in place before embarking on a big move.
These are valuable tips when moving to a new abode. Thanks for sharing these!
We are moving (hopefully, if all goes well) mid-March and I really love your tip about the emergency box! Moving a family of 6 is hard…and having that box of last minute necessity handy would be a life saver!
Some of these essentials, I didn’t even think about when we made our big move. We weren’t home owners at the time. We moved from our apartment in NJ to an apartment in Arizona. It definitely was stressful especially since we had a 2 month old! We had my husband’s company move us and there were a couple of things that broke and my husband was livid.
Great moving tips (and since I’ve moved over 25 times, I know great moving tips when I see them!)
